Frequently Asked Questions

What is a .grd file?
A .grd file is Adobe Photoshop's native gradient format. It stores one or more gradient presets including color stops, positions, midpoints, and transparency information. These files are used across the Adobe Creative Suite.
What is an .afpalette file?
An .afpalette file is the native palette format for the Affinity suite (Designer, Photo, and Publisher) by Serif. It can store color palettes and gradient presets that can be imported through the Swatches panel.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No! The entire conversion runs in your browser using JavaScript. Your gradient files never leave your computer. There is no server processing involved — it's completely private and works offline once the page is loaded.
Which gradient types are supported?
Currently, RGB and HSV/HSB gradients are fully supported. These cover the vast majority of gradient files. CMYK, Lab, Greyscale, and Book Color gradients are not yet supported and will be skipped with a warning.
Is transparency preserved?
Transparency is partially supported. Adobe gradients handle transparency with a separate track of stops, while Affinity combines them. The converter interpolates extra color stops to approximate transparency, but results may not be pixel-perfect.
Which Photoshop versions are supported?
Gradient files from Photoshop 6 and later (version 5 format) are supported. Older gradient files from earlier Photoshop versions use a different format (version 3) that is not currently supported.
How do I import the .afpalette file into Affinity?
Open Affinity Designer, Photo, or Publisher. Go to the Swatches panel, click the hamburger menu (☰), select "Import Palette", then choose "As Application Palette" or "As Document Palette". Navigate to your downloaded .afpalette file and select it.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, this tool is completely free. The conversion engine is based on the open-source GrdToAfpalette project by Mike Stimpson, released under the MIT license.
